Brother Jimmy’s has authentic southern barbecue food. They have a few locations in New York City and we visited the one on 16th street near Union Square. It is really family friendly. How does Kids Under 12 eat free sound? Plus Balloons. The southern sweet tea is very authentic, not easy to find in New York. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a little overwhelming in that everywhere you look is a TV screen showing something, but that keeps the kiddies entertained.
Every day they have various specials. For example, if you’re visiting from the south on Wednesdays you get 25% off your bill. Or Sunday is the “All You Can Eat & Drink” Rib Feast and Draft.
We shared the Humongous Nachos and the Frickles. The Frickles (fried pickles) were very good and not soggy as they sometimes can be. The Humongous Nachos could be a meal in itself. The chips are loaded with all the usual toppings as well as barbecue beans and pulled pork. The cheese happens to be very good in particular and there was also a generous helping of guacamole on top.
For the main course, I died and went to fried chicken heaven. Brother Jimmy’s only serves hormone and anti-biotic FreeBird chicken. There are a whopping four pieces of chicken on the platter. The fried chicken was cooked beautifully. The breast was not dry and the skin was of course crispy. The seasoning had a hint of barbecue dried rub.
They had a nice variety of side dishes including excellent fried Brussels sprouts which would turn anybody into a Brussels sprout lover. The Mac and Cheese and baked beans were delicious as well, with a homemade taste.
My daughter was quite impressed that her kid’s meal came with a full cob of corn. The corn was very crisp and everything was really fresh tasting.
The servers were very attentive. Our drinks never made it to empty it and they anticipated needs for napkins and other stuff.
This was one of the best barbecue meals I’ve had in New York City.
