Hummustir, organic hummus

As far as healthy snacks go, it’s hard to beat hummus. It’s high in protein, but low in saturated fat and carbohydrates. In fact, about half the carbs are fiber, which is good. There are other benefits to hummus. It’s also a good source of phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and folate.

Hummus is a versatile food. It is most often used as a dip (for breads, chips, pretzels, and even raw vegetables), but can also be used as a sandwich or wrap spread in place of mayonnaise. It’s also versatile in flavor. The chickpeas and Tahini that make up the basic recipe of hummus mix well with an array of spices and other flavors such as garlic, peppers, and even lemon or lime juice.

Any variety of hummus is best fresh, but let’s face it, who has time to make hummus from scratch? There are many brands, including store brands that offer containers of hummus in their refrigerated and deli sections. This is perfect if you plan to use it soon after purchasing it, because it needs to stay refrigerated. I, however, like to be able to have snack (or lunch) to take with me, without having to worry about refrigerating it. That’s where Hummustir comes in.

Hummustir makes containers of separately packaged hummus ingredients that you can stir together when you are ready to eat it. Keeping the ingredients in separate sealed packages helps preserve their freshness without having to add preservatives. Hummustir is gluten free, Non-GMO, USDA Organic, and vegan. Each container comes with a package of pureed chickpeas, ground Tahini, a pack of spices, and a stirring stick.

As of right now there are three flavors (spice packs). You can get Classic, Mediterranean (lime and garlic), and Village (garlic and cumin). The fact that the spices are separate means that you can add them to your taste, which is nice since we don’t all prefer the same flavor intensity. The thing that’s really key about Hummustir is the fact that it doesn’t have to be refrigerated until after you mix it. That means you can stock up on it (if you do monthly grocery shopping like I try to do), and you can take it with you without worrying about it going bad.
