As an avid theater-goer, I have seen countless shows on and off Broadway, but I have to say that Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour, playing at the Lyric Theater on 42nd Street since Spring of 2016, was a truly spectacular and unforgettable experience. I had seen many Cirque du Soleil shows before, but this one was undoubtedly one of the best.
What sets Paramour apart from other Cirque shows is how seamlessly the plot and traditional “cirque” elements are integrated. Throughout the show, the acrobats and performers amaze the audience with their stunning skills and feats of strength, but it never feels like just a spectacle for its own sake. Instead, each act serves to advance the story, and the performers’ talents become an essential part of the narrative.
One of the most impressive aspects of the show is the use of technology to enhance the performances. During one dream sequence, a video camera projected what the acrobats were doing behind the scenes, adding a unique perspective to the performance. In the bar scene, the performers all over the background looked just like background characters, but then you notice that their performances were strong in their own right. The ending chase scene, set against the backdrop of the city, was breathtaking, with trampolines hidden throughout that the performers used to launch themselves high into the air.
But what I loved most about Paramour was how it managed to appeal to both adults and children. The show is a perfect family outing, with elements that will leave everyone awestruck. The beautiful operatic songs, accompanied by people flying overhead, are enough to captivate even the most discerning theater-goer, while the intricate and impressive acrobatics will keep kids on the edge of their seats.
In summary, I highly recommend Paramour to anyone who loves theater, Cirque du Soleil, or just a fantastic and unforgettable night out. It’s a stunning, family-friendly show that manages to merge captivating storytelling and incredible acrobatics in a way that will leave you breathless. Don’t miss your chance to see it at the Lyric Theater!
