Is Stove Top Pork Stuffing vegan?
The question in and of itself is clearly mind-blowing. You would think with the word pork in the title itself that it is probably involving pork in the product, but like all great food mysteries, what’s in the title is not necessarily what’s in the product itself. I mean, shouldn’t pork be non-vegan? Not when there’s actually no pork.
This debate started, it seems, from a post on peta.org’s website, which was even updated last month. In the post, they say very clearly:
The stuffing box says, “for pork,” but don’t let that fool you.
In addition, the spoonful app also shows it to be vegan.
It seems Amazon reviews also discuss the vegan and the ingredient lists and the no mention of meat.
What are the ingredients in the Stove Top Stuffing Mix for Pork?
ENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, ONIONS*, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, YEAST, INTERESTERIFIED SOYBEAN OIL, HYDROLYZED SOY PROTEIN, CELERY*, HYDROLYZED CORN GLUTEN, HYDROLYZED WHEAT GLUTEN, CARAMEL COLOR, PARSLEY*, SPICE, SUGAR, AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, TURMERIC (COLOR), CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE, DISODIUM GUANYLATE, DISODIUM INOSINATE, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, WITH BHA, BHT AND ROSEMARY EXTRACT AS PRESERVATIVES.
See, no mention of meat. No mention of milk or anything.
But, if you don’t trust that, there is a Reddit thread where people have gone to great lengths in discussing what is vegan and what is not vegan, and they brought up how the pork version of the Stove Top Stuffing is, in fact, vegan.
To be clear, this is not vegan pork, but simply says pork in the title and yet paradoxically has no pork. I suppose this also might make it kosher and Halal, but don’t quote me on that.
