Like almost everyone else, I’ve heard It Wasn’t Me hundreds of times over the last 25 years. If someone asked me who sang it, I would instantly say: Shaggy.
But watching the performance, I started paying closer attention.
And then it hit me: Shaggy doesn’t actually sing most of the song.
The voice carrying the verses, the melody, and much of the story is RikRok (Ricardo “RikRok” Ducent). Shaggy is absolutely the star of the record, but his role is different. He plays the friend giving the infamous advice and delivers the unforgettable response that became one of the most recognizable phrases in pop music.
According to the song’s background, It Wasn’t Me is structured almost like a conversation: RikRok is the person caught cheating, while Shaggy is the friend telling him to deny everything. (Wikipedia)
That’s what makes the song so interesting. The person most people associate with the song is not actually the person telling the story.
Listening closely, it feels like RikRok carries the majority of the vocals, while Shaggy’s smaller parts dominate our memory because they contain the hook everyone knows. I’d estimate RikRok handles roughly two-thirds of the singing, with Shaggy handling the rest — but the real point is that RikRok’s contribution is much larger than most people realize.

The song was credited as Shaggy featuring RikRok, and it became one of the biggest hits of 2001, spending time at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. (Wikipedia)
It’s also a reminder of how our brains remember music. Sometimes we remember the most distinctive voice, the catchphrase, or the personality behind a song — not necessarily the person doing the most singing.
So here’s the question: Did everyone else know RikRok sang most of “It Wasn’t Me,” or did we all just assume it was a Shaggy song for 25 years?
