Maddle Optimist Paddleboard Review: A Beginner’s First Ride

In 2023, for my first real attempt at stand-up paddleboarding, I took a Maddle Optimist inflatable paddleboard to a calm, small lake with a more experienced friend. Model names, included accessories, specifications and availability may have changed since then.

Setting up the Maddle Optimist

My friend arrived with a large rigid board mounted on the roof of his car. The inflatable Maddle, by contrast, fit into a transport backpack in my trunk. I unrolled it on the ground and connected an electric pump to the 12V outlet in my vehicle. I could have used the included manual pump, but the electric option made setup easier. After roughly 10 minutes, the board was inflated and ready to carry to the water.

The backpack format was one of the most immediately useful features for a beginner. The board was much easier to store and transport than the large rigid board beside it.

Learning to stand and paddle

I chose calm water because paddleboarding looked harder than it turned out to be. My friend showed me how to start on my knees, place my feet, stand and find my balance. I expected several falls before I could remain upright, but I managed to stand on my first outing without the dramatic splash I had anticipated.

Once I was standing, we worked on basic paddle strokes and balance. The board felt stable enough that I could focus on learning rather than constantly fighting to stay upright.

What happened after 90 minutes

After about 90 minutes, I still had not fallen. That created one missing lesson: how to climb back onto the board in deeper water. I deliberately got into the lake so my friend could show me how to remount it. Practicing that skill in controlled conditions was worthwhile before attempting a more adventurous trip.

Back on shore, the board deflated quickly and folded into its transport backpack. That combination of stability, portability and straightforward setup made the Optimist approachable for my first session.

Beginner verdict

My 2023 paddleboarding experience went far better than expected. The Maddle Optimist gave me a stable platform for learning the basics, while the inflatable design made transportation and storage simple. Shoppers should verify current specifications and included equipment before buying.
