Doona Car Seat and Stroller Review

We tested the Doona car seat and stroller in 2022. This review combines our firsthand setup, conversion, maneuverability, cleaning and everyday-use notes. Product specifications, pricing and available editions can change.

I love my Doona. In my experience, the biggest appeal is simple: the infant car seat converts into a stroller, so there is no separate stroller frame to fold, load into the trunk or carry around.

How the Doona Car Seat Stroller Works

The Doona comes with a base that we found straightforward to install in our vehicle while following the manual. Once you are done strolling and want to get into the car, the wheels fold back under the seat and the car seat clicks onto the base.

If you need to use another compatible vehicle without your base, the Doona can also be installed with a seat belt when the current model and vehicle instructions allow it. Always follow both the Doona manual and the vehicle manual rather than assuming the same installation works in every car.

Packaging and Setup From Our First Doona Test

In our first 2022 Doona test, the product arrived well packed and the manual was unusually easy to follow, with illustrations that matched the model we were using. That made the initial setup less confusing than some multi-product manuals we had dealt with.

The base installation felt straightforward in our test. Car-seat installation is safety-critical, however, so our experience is not a substitute for the current manufacturer instructions, fit checks or any professional inspection a parent chooses to use.

Switching Between Stroller and Car Seat Modes

The conversion was the feature that impressed us most. We could move from stroller mode to car-seat mode without taking the baby out of the seat or folding a separate stroller. In one informal test, we timed the sidewalk-to-car transition at about 3.5 seconds. That was one use case, not a universal benchmark, but it illustrates how quickly the mechanism worked once we were familiar with it.

Going back from the car to stroller mode was similarly quick for us. The real benefit was being able to leave a sleeping infant in the same seat while moving between walking and driving.

Maneuverability and Everyday Use

On walks, we liked the swiveling wheels and compact handling. The stroller was easy for us to guide around ordinary obstacles, and the integrated design made short trips between the car and sidewalk feel less cumbersome than carrying a separate infant seat and stroller frame.

The canopy also provided useful coverage in our use. As with any stroller or infant seat, current weight, height, fit and usage limits should come from the manufacturer rather than an older review.

Doona Safety Features

Doona lists three-layer side-impact protection, an anti-rebound bar, a five-point harness and an ergonomic infant insert among the model’s safety-related features. It was designed to function as an infant car seat, stroller and infant carrier.

The company says the product was developed with safety and medical experts and that its infant insert and head support are designed around infant posture. Those are manufacturer statements. Parents should always follow the current installation, fit and usage instructions for their specific model.

Cleaning and Everyday Maintenance

You can remove the textile parts for washing. The head support and infant insert on the model we reviewed used bamboo charcoal fiber textile, which Doona described as antibacterial and hypoallergenic; those are manufacturer claims rather than medical guarantees.

For us, the all-in-one design was especially useful on days that involved frequent switches between walking and driving.

Doona Midnight Edition Details

The Midnight Edition we reviewed added an all-black design with a diamond-pattern seat cover, faux-leather accents and black anodized aluminum. It also came with a coordinated Doona Essentials Bag and Handlebar Cover. I particularly liked the Essentials Bag because it attached easily to the handle and included bottle holders and pockets for organizing small items.

When we reviewed this model in 2022, Doona listed it for use from newborn size up to 35 pounds while rear-facing, and the Midnight Edition was priced at $650. Specifications, pricing and available editions can change, so current buyers should check Doona’s latest product information.

Who the Doona May Suit

The Doona made the most sense to us for families who frequently switch between a car and walking and value not having to carry or store a separate stroller frame. Its compact convenience was the standout feature in both of our 2022 firsthand tests.
