November 13th Is Felix Unger Day

“On November 13th, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence; that request came from his wife. Deep down, he knew she was right. But he also knew that someday he would return to her.”

It was this introduction to the famous TV show, The Odd Couple, that played every single episode. Starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, the premise of the show was that on November 13, Felix Unger split with his wife, Gloria. The narrator, William Woodson, made the famous announcement at the beginning of every episode. Accordingly, it is now quoted annually on social media.

“With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his friend, Oscar Madison. Several years earlier, Madison’s wife had thrown him out, requesting that he never return. Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?” the opening concluded.

Based on the Neil Simon Broadway show, The Odd Couple stars two friends who are opposite personalities and are forced to live together through the happenstance of divorce.

Why was November 13 chosen? It was also, coincidentally, Garry Marshall‘s birthday, and Gary Marshall was the executive producer of the series.

Now, every year, people will jump on Twitter and Facebook posting Happy Felix Unger Day. Likewise, annually, people will share their favorite clips or attempt to watch The Odd Couple streaming online.

So to all our readers, Happy Felix Unger Day!
