The New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show is one of those New York traditions that can make winter and early spring feel considerably less gray. In 2023, the 20th edition was designed by landscape artist Lily Kwong and titled Natural Heritage, filling the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory with thousands of orchids arranged into immersive landscapes.
What Was the NYBG Orchid Show 2023?
Lily Kwong’s installation drew on her ancestral connections to the natural world and on imagery inspired by Chinese landscapes. Rather than simply lining up rare flowers for inspection, the exhibition used orchids as part of larger mountain-like environments that blended horticulture, art and cultural storytelling.
That scale was a big part of the appeal. The show was colorful enough for casual visitors and photographers, but there was also enough thought behind the design to reward anyone who slowed down and looked at how the plants were arranged.
Why the Colors and Setting Worked So Well
The orchids were obviously the stars, but the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory gave them an ideal backdrop. Glass, ironwork, tropical greenery and concentrated bursts of color made the experience feel much larger than a conventional flower display.
It was also an easy way to get an early dose of spring while much of the rest of New York was only beginning to wake up for the season.
Was the Orchid Show Good for Families?
Yes. One of the strengths of the Orchid Show is that families do not need deep botanical knowledge to enjoy it. Kids can respond to the colors, scale and unusual shapes while adults can spend more time with the horticultural and artistic details.
The conservatory setting also makes it an especially useful cold-weather or unpredictable-weather outing.
What Were Orchid Nights?
For adults, NYBG also offered Orchid Nights on select dates during the 2023 run. Those evening events paired the exhibition with music, cocktails, food and additional programming, turning the conservatory into more of a date-night experience after dark.
What Stood Out Most About Natural Heritage?
The strongest part of the 2023 show was the way the orchids felt integrated into a larger environment rather than presented as isolated specimens. Kwong’s design made the exhibition feel meditative in places and spectacular in others, which gave visitors plenty to discover without losing the simple pleasure of seeing thousands of flowers in bloom.

Is the NYBG Orchid Show Worth Visiting?
Based on our 2023 visit, yes. The Orchid Show works because it combines a classic New York institution with an exhibition that changes meaningfully from year to year. Even if you have attended before, a new guest designer can make the conservatory feel completely different.
The 2023 Natural Heritage edition is over, but NYBG continues the annual Orchid Show tradition.
