This review reflects the Old Overholt expression we tasted in 2023. Proof, production details, packaging, availability and pricing can change, so check the current bottle before purchasing.
Old Overholt is a historic American rye whiskey brand associated with Abraham Overholt and a legacy dating to the early 19th century. The bottle we reviewed in 2023 was an 86-proof, non-chill-filtered expression with a spice-forward profile.
Old Overholt aroma
On the nose, we found light spice and pepper alongside fruit and vanilla. The rye character was noticeable without overwhelming the sweeter aromas.
Flavor and mouthfeel
The whiskey had a fuller body than its straightforward presentation might suggest. Spice led the palate, followed by darker fruit notes and enough sweetness to keep the profile balanced.
Finish
The finish was lingering and flavorful, with rye spice carrying through after the fruitier notes faded. For our 2023 tasting, that balance was the strongest part of the bottle.
Old Overholt history
Old Overholt’s identity is rooted in Pennsylvania rye whiskey history and the Overholt family. The brand has changed ownership and expressions over its long life, so historical references should not be read as a claim that today’s whiskey is produced exactly as it was in earlier eras.

Bottom line
Our 2023 bottle of Old Overholt delivered a classic rye profile built around peppery spice, fruit and vanilla, with a satisfying finish. It was an approachable way to explore a longstanding American whiskey name without relying on the exaggerated heritage language that often surrounds historic spirits.
