We reviewed the SmooSat SA3 in January 2023. At the time, it offered a useful mix of portability, speed and claimed range for the price.
SmooSat SA3 Performance
The SmooSat SA3 we tested offered multiple riding modes, including lower-speed and higher-speed settings. The function button made it easy to switch modes, and the display showed current speed. In our test, a moderate setting gave us a useful balance of speed and battery use, and the scooter carried an adult rider uphill on the route we tried.
Design and Durability
The SmooSat SA3 we reviewed was designed with portability in mind. Its aluminum frame was light enough for us to carry, and the folding mechanism worked quickly. The model was offered in multiple colors at the time.
In our use, the SA3 felt sturdy and the folding frame was easy to handle. The model we reviewed listed a maximum rider weight of 220 lbs. The tires handled the surfaces we tried, and the brakes felt responsive in our test, but that does not replace protective gear, routine maintenance or following local riding laws.
Price Point for the SmooSat SA3
At the time of our January 2023 review, the SA3 was listed at $499 on Amazon. We found the build sturdy for the price we tested, but current pricing and availability may be very different.
Range and Portability
When we reviewed it, SmooSat advertised up to 20 miles of range, a 250W motor, a top speed of 15.5 mph and hill-climbing capability up to 15 degrees. Those are historical manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed real-world results; rider weight, terrain, temperature, battery condition and riding mode all affect range and performance.
Plus, it folds up easily with just one quick kick, making it easy to store and transport. This means you can take it with you to work, fold it up and store it, and then ride it home at the end of the day. The folded dimensions of the scooter are 42 x 17 x 15 inches and it weighs around 26 lbs.
SmooSat SA3 Safety Features
The SmooSat SA3 includes several visibility and control features intended to support safer riding, but riders should still use appropriate protective gear and follow local laws. The scooter has a bright LED headlight that illuminates the road ahead, and a rear brake light that alerts other road users of your presence.
The scooter also included a horn and bell for alerting other road users. The handlebar setup felt stable in our use, but no design feature eliminates riding risk.
Battery and Charging
The model we reviewed used a 36V/7Ah lithium-ion battery and listed a 4–6 hour charging time. It also had a battery-level indicator. Battery capacity and range decline with age and use, so those original specifications should not be treated as a promise for an older used scooter.
How the SmooSat SA3 Performed
At the $499 price listed when we reviewed it in January 2023, the SmooSat SA3 offered a useful mix of portability and performance for our needs. The folding mechanism was easy to use, and the model’s original range and speed specifications made it appealing for riders comparing compact commuter-style scooters at the time. Anyone shopping now should compare current models rather than assume this older configuration is still sold unchanged. For another model to compare, read our Atomi Alpha Scooter review.
