West Side Story Premieres on Disney+

If you have not seen West Side Story yet, the new Steven Spielberg version is now streaming on Disney+. They just came out with the trailer today which I’ve popped into our story below.

Films nominated for seven Academy Awards including best picture, the best record in best-supporting actress, in addition, it’s been nominated for 11 critics choice awards. Now I’m not saying that this is a replacement for the original but it does show that it certainly stands quite well on its own.

The acting from the leads is incredible: of Ansel Elgort (Tony); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); with Rita Moreno (as Valentina); and introducing Rachel Zegler (Maria.)

What I love about this particular version is has it’s own style while it pays homage to the past with the inclusion of the original actress: Rita Moreno.

If you need another reason to check it out, it actually is 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The original version hovered right around the same so it might actually be a really interesting family night to watch one and then the next night watch the other.

I never want to have this take the place of the original but if this can be a gate to showcase the original, then I’m all for it.  Guess what I’ll be streaming on Disney + tonight.
