What Are the Top 10 Spices?

top ten spices

What are the top 10 spices? That question requires the answer to another question, “Top 10 what type of spices?” Are we talking about the 10 most popular in the world or the most necessary in a kitchen?

What’s intriguing to me is that McCormick came out with a fancy gift set that basically, accidentally answers that question.

The top 10 spices for every kitchen are as follows: Basil Leaves, Chili Powder, Cinnamon, Cumin, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Oregano, Paprika, Parsley Flakes, and Crushed Red Pepper.

Their holiday gift set, The TEN, by McCormick, contains these 10 everyday herbs and spices for every kitchen. I imagine after a few decades since 1889, they’ve figured out what the top herbs and spices are, based on their sales.

Sure, this is a cute gift for anybody who wants to get that first-time home chef the basics. But I do find the concept rather interesting that this is also what they were determined to be, the top 10 herbs and spices that basically every kitchen needs. I’m sure McCormick would love to mention the fact that these are cool designs and beautiful numbers, but throw that to the side as I find it fascinating that in every list of the top herbs that every kitchen needs, these 10 have come up.

I literally went through dozens of websites to compare who had a top 10 list, and nearly everybody had these on their list.

So what are they again?

Basil Leaves
Chili Powder
Cinnamon
Cumin
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Oregano
Paprika
Parsley Flakes
Crushed Red Pepper

Now you know.
