We reviewed Life in Reterra and the fifth edition of Talisman in 2024 as two very different family game-night options. Life in Reterra focuses on tile-laying and building a community, while Talisman is a longer fantasy-adventure game built around characters, encounters and progression across the board.

Life in Reterra

Life in Reterra uses terrain tiles and themed building sets as players rebuild communities in a world reclaimed by nature. The strategy comes from how the tiles and buildings are placed and how each community develops. We liked that the game mixed planning with enough visual creativity to keep the board changing from one play to the next.

The 2024 edition we reviewed was positioned for players age 10 and up. Current age guidance, components and edition details should be checked on the current box.

Talisman: The Magical Quest Board Game

The fifth-edition Talisman we covered used 12 playable characters and a fantasy quest built around reaching the Crown of Command. The 2024 edition also included illustrated Adventure Cards, updated figures and a QR route to a how-to-play video.

The game is more sprawling and luck-driven than Life in Reterra, with encounters, spells, objects and character changes creating a less predictable session. Component counts, rules and edition details can vary, so current packaging should be checked.

Which Game Fits Which Family?

Life in Reterra made more sense for families who enjoy tile placement, planning and a calmer strategy game. Talisman was the better fit for players who wanted a longer fantasy adventure with more randomness and character-driven moments.
