Bar Marseille was one of those places that felt perfectly matched to Rockaway Beach: French food, wine, cocktails and a breezy coastal setting that made dinner feel a little more like a getaway than a night out in Queens.
What Was Bar Marseille Rockaway Like?
Located in Arverne by the Sea near Rockaway Beach, Bar Marseille mixed a French brasserie-style menu with the casual energy of a beach neighborhood. It did not feel like a formal Manhattan French restaurant transplanted to Queens. The mood was lighter, more relaxed and built around the setting.
The second-floor location helped. The view toward the water, especially in the evening, gave the restaurant a sense of place that was hard to separate from the meal itself.
The Rooftop and Beachside Atmosphere
The atmosphere was one of Bar Marseille’s strongest assets. Depending on where you sat, you could enjoy the indoor dining room or spend time on the rooftop deck, which made especially good sense on warm Rockaway nights.
Live music occasionally added another layer to the experience, and the overall feel landed somewhere between neighborhood restaurant, wine bar and beach escape.
What We Ate at Bar Marseille
The menu leaned into recognizable French dishes. During our visit, the French onion soup and fried zucchini made strong starters, while the endive salad added something lighter.
For mains, the mussels and steak frites were the dishes that stood out most. They fit the restaurant’s identity well: classic enough to feel familiar, but relaxed enough for the Rockaways.
Wine Tastings and Cocktails
Bar Marseille also put real energy into its wine program. We attended a wine-tasting event led by sommelier Michael Mendal, who made the educational side approachable and entertaining rather than overly formal.
The French wine selection was a natural fit for the menu, while the signature cocktail list gave the restaurant enough range for people who were there more for the atmosphere than the wine lesson.
How Was the Service?
Our service was warm and attentive throughout the visit. That hospitality mattered because Bar Marseille worked best as a full evening experience rather than simply a place to grab a quick meal.
The staff, wine program, food and waterfront setting all reinforced the same idea: this was meant to feel leisurely.
Is Bar Marseille Rockaway Still Open?
No. Bar Marseille has since closed, and current restaurant listings mark the Rockaway Beach location as permanently closed.
Our Take
Bar Marseille was memorable because it did something a little different for the Rockaways. It brought French brasserie food, wine education and a lively rooftop atmosphere together without losing the neighborhood’s casual beach energy.
