Land Rover Defender 130 Review: A Viking in a Tuxedo

We drove the Land Rover Defender 130 in 2023 and came away impressed by how it combined a large, upright SUV body with surprisingly manageable road manners. The “Viking in a tuxedo” description still fits: it looks rugged, but the cabin and driving experience feel much more polished than the exterior suggests.

Driving the Defender 130

On back roads in the Catskills, the Defender 130 felt easier to place than its size initially suggested. The elevated seating position gave a broad view of the road, while the steering and general road manners felt more approachable than the vehicle’s imposing dimensions might imply.

Passenger and cargo space

Space is one of the Defender 130’s defining traits. The current model can seat up to eight people, and Land Rover still positions it as the largest Defender body style. In our 2023 drive, the generous headroom and long cabin were immediately noticeable.

Parking and visibility

The available surround-view camera system was especially useful in a vehicle this large. It made tight parking situations easier to judge and reduced some of the intimidation that comes with maneuvering a long SUV in urban or crowded settings.

Capability without the hype

The Defender 130 is designed for all-wheel-drive and off-road use, but capability still depends on tires, conditions, driver experience, and the exact configuration. We would not treat its size or rugged construction as a substitute for normal driving caution.
