10 Bars in Denver to Try

I stopped in Colorado on my way to Los Angeles in 2008 and never left. Even after traveling around the United States and Europe, Denver remains one of my favorite cities for music, cocktails and neighborhood bars.

This list began as a local’s snapshot of favorite Denver spots. Bars, menus, hours and event schedules can change, so confirm that a venue is open and check its current details before making a special trip.

1. The Block Distilling

The Block earned a place on this list for its house-distilled spirits, creative cocktails and support of Denver’s music community. It hosted the release of Love Stallion’s “Valentine” video and created cocktails connected with the band. See The Block Distilling for current hours and menus.

2. Odell Brewing Five Points Brewhouse

Odell’s Denver brewhouse occupies a converted historic building and was a favorite for its rooftop patio, neighborhood views and relaxed atmosphere. The event calendar and tap list vary, so check the Five Points location page before visiting.

3. Retrograde

Retrograde stood out as a hidden cocktail bar reached through an ice-cream shop. Low lighting, vintage movies and colorful booths gave it the speakeasy mood that made the experience memorable.

4. The Brown Palace

The historic Brown Palace combined a substantial spirits selection with live piano and jazz during our visits. Its Ship Tavern and atrium programming can change; consult the hotel’s current dining and entertainment information.

5. Cuba Cuba Cafe and Bar

Cuba Cuba served Cuban food and mojitos in a converted Victorian house. The plantain chips, guacamole and vaca frita were the dishes that stayed with me, while the patio made it an especially appealing warm-weather stop.

6. Roosevelt

Roosevelt offered a downtown cocktail-bar atmosphere with dark wood and a classic lounge feel. The space also appeared in Love Stallion’s “Big Rock Radio” music video, giving it a personal connection to this list.

7. Steuben’s

Steuben’s paired comfort food with cocktails and a retro dining-room style. On pleasant days, the open garage doors and patio atmosphere made a classic daiquiri there especially enjoyable.

8. Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox

Ophelia’s combined a restaurant, bar and live-music venue in a historic building. Second-floor seating offered a useful view of the main stage during performances. Check the current event calendar and age restrictions before choosing a show.

9. The 1Up Arcade Bar

The 1Up appealed to us for arcade games, pinball, drinks and live music. Specific machines and entertainment schedules rotate, so the current lineup may differ from the one that inspired this recommendation.

10. The Tatarian

The Tatarian drew inspiration from the history of the Berkeley neighborhood and built a menu around inventive cocktails. Its Tennyson Street location made it a natural stop while exploring the surrounding arts district.

Planning a Denver Night Out

Choose by mood: a distillery or brewery for locally made drinks, a music venue for a full evening, or a cocktail bar when the menu is the main event. Confirm transportation, reservations, dress policies and current hours, and always arrange a safe ride after drinking.
