Gourmet Prospector Popcorn and Jobs for People with Disabilities

It all started in a first-run movie theater in Ridgefield, CT. Valerie, the owner of the Prospector Theater, runs a non-profit dedicated to providing employment for people with disabilities.

Did you know 82% of people with disability don’t have a job? Valerie wanted to change that and 74% of prospects (employees of the theater) identify with a disability. Her sister, who also has a disability, inspired her to open the theatre and create opportunities and a higher quality of life through meaningful work.

Popcorn and movies are synonymous. The popcorn at the Prospector is gourmet popcorn and it was surely popping off the shelves. That’s when it was time to expand operations and make it available to more than just theatergoers. As operations expanded so did jobs for the yet underrepresented.

I had the pleasure of trying the first three, classic caramel, Belgian chocolate toffee, and maple walnut ice cream. It was excellent. I really couldn’t stop at one bite. It was sweet and delicious. The maple walnut ice cream resembled a creamy nutty taste with a melt-in-your-mouth appeal. The combination of popcorn and chocolate in the Belgian chocolate toffee was amazing. The classic caramel brought me back to childhood days and sweet memories.
