Dr. Kay MacPhee is the founder of Ooka Island and leads both program and company development. As a literacy researcher and educator, Dr. MacPhee has devoted her life to teaching the key literacy skills needed to form the foundation for education, and was Inspired by her son who was born profoundly deaf to spend 25 years developing techniques enabling the hearing-impaired to form language skills and learn how to read. In 1994, she launched the SpellReadreading intervention program for all ages, which was rated #1 by the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse and acquired by Kaplan K-12 in 2006 and then, in 2013, , Dr. MacPhee launched the early reading program Ooka Island, which she continues to expand today as its Director of Learning and Research.
